Heritage Weekend Volunteer (One-off Event) – Saturday 19 September 2020
Grand Junction is a community, arts and heritage project delivered by Paddington Development Trust in partnership with St Mary Magdalene Church. Recent regeneration work has seen extensive conservation of the Victorian building, and the addition of a contemporary community wing provides a bright, welcoming space for an eclectic and collaborative programme of music, arts and performance for young people, families, and adults.
On Saturday 19 September 2020, Grand Junction at St Mary Magdalene will open its doors to celebrate two fantastic, free, visitor events: Open House London (the world’s largest architecture festival) and Heritage Open Days (England’s largest festival of history and culture).
This year will look a little different to previous years, with many health and safety measures in place to ensure a safe and positive experience for visitors onsite. Volunteers will play a vital role in helping us to reopen our doors to our local community.
Where?

When?
Saturday 19 September 2020 – we ask for a commitment of 3 hours between 10:00-17:00.
What will the role involve?
Working under the supervision of Grand Junction staff, Heritage Weekend Volunteers will:
- Offer visitors a warm welcome to Grand Junction, and provide clear information about health, safety, and hygiene measures on arrival, to help minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission
- Supervise visitor meeting points and manage arrival procedures
- Steward entrances and exits to the building, and toilets, and support the managed flow of visitors throughout the building
- Collect basic visitor data, including monitoring visitor numbers, and recording personal information to assist the NHS Track and Trace service
- Help with increased cleaning requirements throughout the building
Who are we looking for?
This role is suited to people who:
- Are friendly and welcoming, with excellent customer service skills

Volunteers are afforded the same level of protection to their health and safety as staff and visitors to Grand Junction. A thorough risk assessment has been conducted to manage the risk of COVID-19 transmission. This will be regularly reviewed, and updated government guidance will be monitored and observed. Increased cleaning will take place within the building.
Volunteers will be asked to attend a 1-hour training session ahead of the event so that they are familiar and confident in employing the necessary health & safety measures during their volunteering session.

Grand Junction is usually open Monday – Saturday, offering a range of cultural events and community activities scheduled at various times, including daytime and evenings. We ask for a commitment of 3 hours per week, with a level of flexibility.
What will the role involve?
Working under the supervision of Grand Junction staff, General Volunteers will:
- Help to prepare the venue ahead of an activity or event, including but not limited to, arranging furniture, displaying information signage and floor markings, setting-up equipment, and restocking reading materials
- Offer guests a warm welcome to Grand Junction, and providing clear information about health, safety and hygiene measures on arrival, to help minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission
- Steward entrances and exits to the building, and support the managed flow of visitors throughout the building
- Support with basic collection of visitor data, including monitoring and restricting visitor numbers, and recording personal information to assist the NHS Track and Trace service
- Support with increased cleaning requirements, and general upkeep of the building
- Help to promote activities and events at Grand Junction
- Administration tasks, including research, data entry, filing, photocopying, shredding and archiving

- Develop new digital links and relationships with local supporters and organisations
- Help to grow followers and interactions across all platforms

Volunteers enable us to do so much more at Grand Junction. We’re looking for volunteers to provide high-quality translation of our resources and materials to strengthen our communication link with people in our community who have Arabic as their first language. This role offers volunteers an opportunity to make a real difference in our community; to relay vital health and wellbeing information, to engage families in creative social activities, and to connect people from different communities and cultures.

- Provide accurate translation of resources and materials into Arabic, enabling our information to reach more people within the local community
- Upload translations to a variety of digital design programmes, for the creation of engaging posters and leaflets
- Proof-check translations and text format
- Translate and record audio messages into Arabic, for example, voicemail greetings, and facilitate communication between Grand Junction staff and members of our community
- Attend community activities and events, offering visitors a warm welcome and supporting people to get the most out of their visit to Grand Junction
- Visit Arabic-speaking groups in the community and promote Grand Junction’s activities and events
Who are we looking for?
This role is suited to people who:
- Are able to communicate fluently, both verbally and in writing, in English and Arabic
- Have some experience in translation or interpreting – desirable, not essential

Our Living Heritage Oral History project aims to record the memories and experiences of people who have lived and worked in the local area, as a unique and impactful way to deepen our understanding of social heritage. We’re looking for volunteers with good administration skills and an interest in local heritage to support us to collate over 30 oral history interviews in preparation for publication and exhibiting.

What will the role involve?
Working under the supervision of the Volunteer Manager, Oral History Administration Volunteers will:
- Transcribe audio files to create verbatim records of Living Heritage Project interviews
- Review transcriptions against audio interviews, correct any incorrect or missing typing, and input timecodes
- Edit Word documents so that all transcripts are consistently formatted
- Compose summaries and captions for selected oral history interview extracts
- Create digital folders for each interview
- Interpret, curate and create appealing content for publication on the Grand Junction website and the monthly e-bulletin
- Keep an accurate record of volunteered hours

- Have a passion for living heritage and sharing people’s memories and experiences

Volunteer Administrator
Grand Junction at St Mary Magdalene is a new venue for community, arts and culture based at St Mary Magdalene’s Church, run by Paddington Development Trust.
Our mission is to create, foster and present an eclectic, collaborative programme of music, arts and performance for young people, families, and adults in our three amazing spaces.
Volunteers enable us to do so much more at Grand Junction. We’re looking for a friendly, organised, methodical volunteer to support with the smooth running of our community activities and volunteer programmes. The role will include a range of essential administrative tasks.

We ask for a commitment of 3 hours per week, with a level of flexibility
What will the role involve?
Working under the supervision of Grand Junction staff, the Volunteer Administrator will:
• Support with basic collection and entry of data, including maintaining accurate records of visitor numbers and workshop attendees
• Respond to enquiries by email and telephone
• Update paper and electronic filing systems, including scanning, photocopying and archiving documents
• Prepare printed materials for our activities and volunteer programmes
• Ensure that information leaflets are kept well stocked and displayed for the public
• Help to prepare mailouts to supporters, volunteers and stakeholder organisations
• Upload activities and events to online promotional sites and social media
• Support with operational needs, such as room set-up, venue signage and maintenance of public spaces
Who are we looking for?
This role is suited to people who:
• Are clear and confident communicators
• Have basic administration and IT skills, and good attention-to-detail
• Are methodical and flexible, with strong interpersonal skills

Junction Juniors After-School Club Volunteer
Grand Junction at St Mary Magdalene’s is a new venue for community, arts and culture based at St Mary Magdalene Church, run by Paddington Development Trust.
Our mission is to create, foster and present an eclectic, collaborative programme of music, arts and performance for young people, families, and adults in our three amazing spaces.
Volunteers enable us to do so much more at Grand Junction. We’re looking for enthusiastic, lively and friendly after-school club volunteers to assist at our weekly Junction Juniors session for Year 1 – Year 6 children. Offering a mixture of creative activities, we use art and drama to explore heritage-focused themes, including local historical people, the arts, transport and the environment. Junction Juniors After-School Club volunteers will support facilitators to create a dynamic, engaging and safe learning environment.
Where?

When?
Junction Juniors After-School Club runs on Mondays, 3:45-5:30pm. Volunteers are required to be available from 3-6pm.
What will the role involve?
Working under the supervision of the Young People’s & Schools Manager, Junction Juniors After-School Club volunteers will:
- Help to prepare the Education Studio ahead of Junction Juniors, including arranging tables and furniture and setting-up arts materials and resources
- Greet children and parents, and offer a warm welcome to Grand Junction
- Support parents to complete the necessary registration and consent forms
- Assist the facilitator to deliver dynamic and engaging activities, and help to foster a friendly, fun and supportive environment
- Prepare and serve refreshments
- Help to promote Junction Juniors in the community, including distributing leaflets and posters around the local area
- Research topics and themes to be explored during the sessions, and prepare resources and materials
- Collect feedback and evaluation forms from children and parents
- Help to set down and tidy after the session, including washing up, sweeping, tidying away equipment, moving furniture, and cleaning.
Who are we looking for?
This role is suited to people who:
- Enjoy working with children in a learning environment
- Are friendly, enthusiastic and engaging, with good interpersonal skills
- Work well as part of a team, and can competently follow instruction
- Are punctual and proactive
- Have a good level of spoken English

We’re looking for friendly, welcoming and enthusiastic volunteers to assist in delivering our monthly Art Party; a creative Saturday morning club with activities and a bubble disco for the whole family. Art Party volunteers will support the facilitator to deliver activities such as Lego building, mono printing and card making in a dynamic, engaging and safe learning environment.

When?
Art Party takes over Grand Junction on the third Saturday of each month, from 10am-12pm. Volunteers are required to be available from 9am-12:30pm.
What will the role involve?

We depend on the support of volunteers to run Grand Junction. We’re looking for enthusiastic and friendly volunteer stewards to help us prepare our venue for various arts and culture events, offer our visitors a warm welcome, and provide information and assistance to ensure that our events run smoothly and are enjoyed by all.

When?
Our What’s On programme includes a range of cultural events and community activities scheduled at various times, including daytime, evenings and weekends. We will invite you to select events which are convenient for you.
What will the role involve?
Working under the supervision of Grand Junction staff, Event Steward volunteers will:
- Help to prepare the venue ahead of an event, including but not limited to, arranging chairs and furniture, setting-up technical equipment, arranging staging, distributing reading materials, and stocking refreshments
- Offer guests a warm welcome to Grand Junction, check event tickets, and signpost visitors around the venue
- Enrich visitor experience by answering information queries about the event, or the venue
- Help to ensure that guests have a safe and enjoyable visit to our community space by monitoring health and safety considerations, including supervising fire exits and inspecting visitor facilities
- Assist staff in serving and selling refreshments, and collecting empty glassware and tableware after use
- Helping to set down after an event, including but not limited to, stacking and tidying away equipment, moving furniture, and clearing and cleaning the event area

- Enjoy working as part of a team with shared responsibilities
- Are friendly and welcoming, with good interpersonal skills
- Take pride in providing excellent customer service skills

Our tours tell the story of the building’s rich Victorian history, and its connection to the development of the local area.

When?
Grand Junction offers free heritage talks and tours to the public from Monday – Saturday, both daytime and evenings. We ask for a commitment of 3 hours per week, with a level of flexibility.
What will the role involve?
Working under the supervision of Grand Junction staff, Heritage Ambassador volunteers will:
- Learn about the fascinating history of St Mary Magdalene’s Church, and the living heritage of the local area, and carry out independent research where necessary
- Deliver engaging and inspiring scripted tours of the building and immediate local area for people of all ages and backgrounds
- Offer visitors a warm welcome, and enrich their experience by supporting visitors to get the most out of their visit to Grand Junction
- Champion inclusivity, and adapt talk and tour content to suit the audience
- Keep accurate records of visitor numbers to the building
- Support visitors to complete visitor experience feedback
- Offer visitors information about our What’s On programme, and other activities and events at Grand Junction
- Promote volunteering opportunities at Grand Junction to visitors and the public
- Help to ensure that guests have a safe and enjoyable visit by monitoring health and safety considerations within and outside the building
